A moisture separator is a device used to remove liquid water droplets (moisture) from a gas or steam stream. It is commonly used in steam systems, compressed air systems, and gas pipelines to improve efficiency and protect downstream equipment.

How it works

Depending on the design, a moisture separator removes water using one or more of these methods:

• Centrifugal (cyclonic): The fluid spins, and heavier water droplets are thrown to the outer wall and drained away.
• Baffle type: The flow changes direction abruptly, causing water droplets to strike baffles and separate.
• Mesh or vane type: Fine droplets coalesce on a mesh or vane pack, forming larger droplets that drain by gravity.

Common applications

• Steam lines: Prevents wet steam from reaching turbines, heat exchangers, and process equipment.
• Compressed air systems: Removes condensed water before air reaches tools, valves, and instruments.
• Natural gas pipelines: Reduces liquid carryover and protects compressors and metering equipment.
• HVAC and refrigeration systems: Helps separate liquid from vapor in certain applications.

Typical installation

A moisture separator is usually installed:

1. Downstream of a boiler or steam generator (for steam systems).

A drain (often with an automatic drain valve or steam trap) is connected at the bottom of the separator to continuously remove collected water.
